If you plan to paint your cabinets on site, then we have recommended painting techniques shown here:
Painting Techniques: Painting depends on your application technique and the product you use. I prefer Sherwin Williams Gallery paints for a nice 1k finish finish
(You won’t be able to spray a 2k finish on the job-site, its toxic and frankly dangerous). I prefer a good quality HVLP sprayer like the 3m performance spray gun. Don't brush or roll on a finish to a cabinet door. This never looks good IMO.
- Apply a single coat of latex primer (Skip this step if you ordered the doors with PRIMER ONLY already applied)
- Orbital and hand sand at 220 grit (orbital sand the faces of the frame and panel, but be careful to not nick the inside edge details, hand sand those lightly).
- Apply the first coat of gallery paints, let dry, and sand again with 320 grit.
- Apply the second and final coat, keeping the door flat, away from dust, and at room temperature. Avoid overheating the finish to prevent an orange peel texture (if you have an odd texture, sand with 320, spray again, and let dry at a lower temp)
This process yields a professional-grade finish. You can apply as many additional coats as you have time and patience for:
For a third coat, sand the previous coats with 400 grit sandpaper using light pressure. Hand sand lightly around the edge details. Then spray the final coat and let it dry as before. For a fourth coat (though I haven't tried this), sand with 600 grit and apply the final coat. Not sure if it’s worth it, but you can see the process and escalation here.
